Avoid Those Winter Fashion Mistakes With Our Top 5 Tips

There’s nothing quite like winter fashion.

Novelty jumpers, gnomish hats and pinning a sprig of mistletoe to our shirts, they always seem like a good idea at the time, don’t they?

Rather than waiting for the photos to be passed around the office of you looking… let’s say not at your best, we’re here to guide you through the x most common winter fashion mistakes.

  1. The wrong hat can make you look like a child… or a gnome

And that is never a good look!

The thing with hats is that we tend to buy them in a rush because it’s cold, or raining and we’re looking for something warm and dry!

Buy your hat now so you can be confident you’ve made the right choice – a neutral coloured beanie is a safe choice for most situations, although a trapper hat is your best bet for the smart casual look.

  1. Not layering properly

As we explored in our essential guide to layering, achieving the layered look can be easy and look great when you put some thought and effort into it.

Clashing colours and textures isn’t the right approach, and it won’t do you any favours in the fashion stakes.

Choose key pieces in neutral shades and you won’t go too far wrong.

  1. Novelty jumpers – save them for Christmas Day

The trend for wearing novelty jumpers has grown rapidly over recent years to the point that we’re spotting them out and about in November.

Ok, they’re not all terrible, some can be quite fun but is that the right approach right now? If you have business negotiations ahead or a serious meeting, you might want to save the novelty for when you get back and can kick back with some goofy slippers at home.

  1. Not tying your scarf right

You know there’s a right way to wear a scarf, yes?

They’re meant to be wrapped around the neck to keep it warm, not pretentiously thrown over the shoulder (unless that’s the look you’re going for!).

There’s actually a few ways to tie a scarf correctly but the ‘Parisian’ is the simplest and most common. Fold the scarf lengthwise, wrap around your neck and pull the two ends through the loop you’ve created.

It’ll keep you snugly warm and looking good too.

  1. Buy clothes that fit you well

It can be tempting to ‘go large’ when buying winter wear, but if it doesn’t fit right it won’t look good.

This is particularly the case when you’re layering – if one layer is too loose, or too tight, it’s going to throw the entire look off.

Know your sizes, shop carefully and make sure you try before you buy.

If there’s any season where you can be forgiven for being unfashionable, it’s winter but knowing the mistakes to avoid can ensure you’re remembered at the Christmas party for the right reasons!
